Who doesn’t love a rebel? A world icon of the Renaissance Art Michelangelo’s David. A smaller, scaled down replica of his bust, I could help myself to use this as a canvas, a fun piece. With this I ventured into how our earlier art history has shaped and influenced the art of today, paying particular attention to earlier traditional tattoo art. Many symbols and themes seem to be borrowed and adapted from different periods of art history especially the renaissance but adapted into an almost rebellious way to serve as another way of storytelling and as a means of self-expression. Themes appear to be retold in bolder and more vibrant forms, details are translated into a simpler and less intricate symbol.
The ivy vine growing around the bust depicts to me the passing of time, we are still rooted and connected to the symbolism of the past and it’s amazing the different ways it shapes and influence our art of now and centuries past.
