The earliest known Ouroboros motifs were found in ancient Egypt. Over centuries the Ouroboros was adapted into many other cultures, often depicted as a snake or a dragon eating its own tail. The circling of the creature is a representation of the circle of life, death and rebirth. The Ouroboros is also interpreted as a transition of souls and in some cultures considered to be a fertility symbol. In more modern times the Ouroboros has adopted the meanings of infinity or wholeness and considered a basic mandala for alchemy. Here represented as a reptilian trilogy of the Ouroboros.
